A-SPAN Opening Early Today to Serve As Cooling Center For Street Homeless, Donations of Bottled Water Welcome

The District of Columbia has issued a “hyperthermia” alert with the expected high temperature today of 101 degrees F and a heat index near 110F. The A-SPAN (Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network) main office located at 2708-B South Nelson St, Arlington, VA 22206, will open at 9:30 am this morning for street homeless individuals to come inside and stay cool. A-SPAN’s staff request donations of bottled water to distribute on the street today to those who cannot make it inside.

A-SPAN Named Finalist in Toyota 100 Cars For Good Program

A-SPAN (the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network) is one of 500 finalists in Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program, which will award vehicles to 100 nonprofit organizations based on votes from the public beginning May 9, 2011. Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program will showcase five non-profit organizations each day for 100 days on Toyota’s Facebook page, facebook.com/toyota. Visitors to the page can vote once a day for the organization that they feel is most deserving of a new Toyota vehicle. A-SPAN will be one of the five organizations highlighted for voting on June 22, 2011.

A-SPAN Receives $91,000 in New HUD Funding for Housing Chronically Homeless Adults

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced $91,000 in new funding for A-SPAN’s Permanent Supportive Housing Programs (PSH) for chronically homeless individuals. This funding is part of an overall $2.4 million in grants given to eleven programs in the state of Virginia.

Arlington Community Joins A-SPAN for Special Christmas Eve Dinner for Homeless

A-SPAN ( Arlington Street People's Assistance Network) staff,  local  volunteers and community religious and business organizations have joined forces to serve a  festive dinner at Arlington's Emergency Winter Shelter (EWS), on Christmas Eve. A stuffed turkey  has been donated by Temple Rodef Shalom and an assortment of  pies and cookie plates for dessert  has been donated by Harris Teeter.

A-SPAN Hosts Community Events Saturday November 6 for Emergency Winter Shelter Awareness - Enhanced Services Added to Aid the Homeless

A-SPAN, the Arlington Street People's Assistance Network, opened it's Emergency Winter Shelter, Monday, November 1st serving the homeless through March 31, 2011. Saturday, November 6, at 2049 N. 15th Street, across from the Arlington Courthouse, from  2 – 5 pm, A-SPAN will host an open house for the community to tour the shelter, take part in informational presentations and join a mini-walk for the homeless ending at Whitlow's On Wilson for complimentary refreshments.

Giant Food to Donate $10K Lottery Commission to Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network

Giant Food of Landover, Md. will donate $10,000 to the Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network (A-SPAN). The donation is the commission Giant received from the Virginia Lottery as a result of selling the winning Mega Millions Ticket at the Shirley Park Giant on September 17, 2010.
